A Visit to Turkana
J.Lynne Africa C.D.O CEO Mr. William visits the Turkana community to assist with a food giveaway and to assess the community's problems while giving away free medicine and information on health care.
Project Background
Turkana is the poorest among 47 counties in Kenya with 88% of the people there living below the poverty level. Turkana has very harsh living conditions for many families to survive and thrive.
The people of Turkana must look for the essential everyday necessities, that are hard to find such as food and water but often conflicts break out over water, fishing, and livestock.
Turkana are herders whose way of life is influenced by the harsh environment in which they reside. Infrastructural development is not available in most areas along with resources.
The Challenges faced by the Turkana
Inhabitants face an environmental catastrophe crisis because the Turkana Lake is drying up due to Ethiopia's massive Gibe III Dam infrastructure.
Due to the unforgiving nature of the environment the people of Turkana face harsh weather conditions and suffer losses of their animals due to lack of water and periodic famine in the region.
There is minimal access to water infrastructure like borehole resources and the indigenous communities are highly dependent on the lake for their food crops, livestock grazing, watering, and fishing.
The schools in Turkana are underdeveloped with very minimal classrooms for learning and teaching.
Turkana is in great need of financial support of food, water access, sanitation, infrastructural developments, and resources.
The children have no access to education due to the nomadic lifestyle and culture of the Turkana community.
